Sandon Amick turned toward the camera—undoubtedly operated by one of his soldiers—and nodded. The image shifted to a stock photo of the planet Rizen, the static screen for all Station monitors.

Adam stood stunned, realizing he hadn’t taken a breath in over a minute. Well, he had that figured all wrong. It wasn’t the Cartels at all, but a bunch of renegade Unidor agents looking to make a quick—and sizable—score at the expense of the Conference and Unidor’s reputation. Adam couldn’t help but snicker. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of people—those arrogant, self-righteous bastards. But now that the gloating was over, Adam was in a real predicament. There weren’t one or two terrorists, but probably twenty-four, maybe more.

Then Adam shrugged. At least the company-being Endic Vor wasn’t part of them. At least Adam read him right. But now the terrorists—kidnappers—whatever you wanted to call them, controlled the Station and all means on and off. Of course, Amick couldn’t have expected a fly in the ointment like Adam to be wandering the halls. He amended his count—twenty-three, after subtracting for the agent he killed a few minutes ago.

Still, this was someone else’s fight. Kimm seemed to be in a protected class, and Adam had no doubt the money would be paid. So, he could either just hunker down somewhere and wait for this to blow over, or he could make it to the landing bay to verify what Amick said about the lockdown was true. From his experience, that probably wasn’t the case. The bad guys had to have a way off the Station, and that could be Adam’s ticket to freedom.

Although he had no idea where he was, Adam did have a good sense of direction. He had to go down to the main Concourse and then aft to the landing bay. But what was aft on a wheel? He’d figure that out later. Right now, his handiwork in the suite would soon be discovered, if it hadn’t already. That would let the kidnappers know that there was a rogue player in the game, although Adam had no intention of getting more involved than he already was. But Amick and his people wouldn’t know that. Surely, they wouldn’t leave well enough alone and not come looking for him. That was wishful thinking.

But from Adam’s point of view, he said let the Bad Guys have their money. Hopefully, not too many innocent people would have to die. And as far as Kimm went, well, the Starfire contract offered no guarantees. Tidus would get paid whether Kimm made it out alive or not.

That was too bad, too. Adam liked the slimy tadpole. He was a hoot. He really hoped Kimm would make it out alive. If not, well, no bonus for Adam.
